Kitten care
Caring for your Maine Coon
A few practical basics for the first weeks and beyond. Every kitten leaves us socialised and litter-trained — this is how to help the transition go smoothly.
01The first days at home
A new home is a big change. Give the kitten a calm, quiet space to start, and let it explore at its own pace.
- Start in one quiet room with food, water, litter and a bed, then expand gradually.
- Keep the first days calm — limit visitors and loud noise while it settles.
- Keep the same food we've been using at first, then transition slowly if you change it.
02Feeding
Maine Coons are large, slow-maturing cats and do best on high-quality protein-rich food.
- Offer a premium diet appropriate to the kitten's age.
- Fresh water always available; many cats prefer a wide bowl or a fountain.
- Change foods gradually over several days to avoid stomach upset.
03Grooming the coat
The semi-long Maine Coon coat is easier to maintain than it looks, with a little routine.
- Comb through once or twice a week; more during seasonal moulting.
- Pay attention to the trousers and behind the ears, where tangles form.
- Introduce nail trimming and combing early so it becomes normal.
04Growth and development
Maine Coons mature slowly, often filling out over three to four years. Enjoy the long kittenhood.
- Expect steady growth rather than sudden size; bone and muscle develop over years.
- Provide sturdy scratching posts and vertical space — they love to climb.
- Keep play and enrichment daily; they stay playful well into adulthood.
