Understanding Maine Coon Health Testing
The phrase ‘health tested’ can mean very different things. A DNA result, cardiac ultrasound and hip evaluation examine different questions and should not be presented as interchangeable.
DNA and clinical screening are different
DNA tests can report specific variants, including variants associated with HCM, SMA or PKDef when those tests were actually performed. A negative result for a specific variant does not guarantee lifetime freedom from disease.
An echocardiogram is a point-in-time assessment of cardiac structure and function. It does not become equivalent to a DNA test, and a routine clinical examination does not prove genotype.
Review animal-linked evidence
A useful record identifies the animal, test, method, date, result and issuer or clinic where publication is appropriate. If a field is not supported by a document, it should be described as available on request, pending publication or not publicly verified rather than assumed clear.
Ask about the relevant parents
Health information should be connected to the breeding pair relevant to the selected kitten. Ask Irina which parent records are available, what each record establishes and what remains outside the scope of that evidence.
