Your kitten’s first 30 days at home: a calm, practical guide

Prepare a quiet arrival, a steady routine and thoughtful introductions.

Before arrival

Set up a quiet room with a litter tray, water, suitable food, a hiding place, scratcher and comfortable rest area. Ask the breeder what the kitten is currently eating, what litter it uses and what routine is familiar. Secure windows, balconies, cables and unsafe plants. Confirm the handover documents and veterinarian contact details.

The first week

Allow the kitten to explore at its own pace. Keep feeding and sleeping routines predictable; avoid many visitors immediately. Monitor appetite, water intake, litter use and behaviour without forcing affection. Arrange the veterinary follow-up recommended for the individual kitten. Persistent refusal to eat, marked lethargy or breathing difficulty warrants prompt veterinary advice.

Weeks two to four

Introduce new rooms gradually, then other animals using separation, scent exchange and supervised sessions. Reward relaxed behaviour rather than rushing contact. Start short, gentle grooming sessions and offer enrichment and play. Share updates with the breeder and raise questions early. A successful transition is measured by the cat’s comfort, not by the speed at which it adjusts.
