HCM DNA testing

A Maine Coon HCM DNA test can identify the specific MYBPC3 variant included in that assay. A negative result for that variant is useful information, but it does not rule out every possible cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

The result must be linked to the named animal, laboratory, sample or report date and result notation.

Echocardiography

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart. Cornell describes echocardiography as the gold standard for diagnosing feline HCM. It records cardiac findings at the time of the examination; it is not a lifetime guarantee.

SMA and PKDef

DNA tests for spinal muscular atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency address particular inherited variants. Record the tested animal, laboratory, date and exact result instead of summarising all testing as “fully clear.”

Clinical examination and vaccination

A veterinary examination describes clinical findings; it does not prove genotype. Vaccination records document products and dates and should be interpreted with a veterinarian for the kitten’s age, destination and health context.

Microchip, passport and travel records

A microchip supports identity when the number matches the animal’s records. A pet passport or health certificate supports a travel or administrative process; neither is a genetic test.

• Test type and exact variant understood
• Issuer or laboratory named
• Sample/report/examination date visible
• Result copied exactly
• DNA and echocardiography kept separate
• Kitten records not inferred from parent records
• Questions reviewed with a veterinarian where appropriate
